1934 Born in the province of Basrah in Iraq, and lived in Abu Al-Aswad Al-Dawali Street in Al-Ashar. He was a very active child, the eldest of six, and thus became the spoiled child in his family, such that nobody could reject his request. From a young age, he showed signs of talent and interest in sculpture and drawing, as he used to make models out of clay and colored cardboard. He would also draw on the walls of houses and the ships anchored in the Ashar port of Basrah.
1952-1953 Studied painting at the Institute of Fine Arts’ morning sessions in Baghdad. Ismail says in his conversation with Adel Kamel, "At the institute, we had a crafts lesson that Professor Al-Chekhli taught, and we used to work with clay. In the first lesson, I caught Al-Chekhli's attention, so he took me to Jewad Selim, and the latter told me, “You have to be a sculptor.” Indeed, Jewad guided me; he has credit for everything that happened after that”.
He was assigned to work as a drawing teacher in Nasiriyah by the Ministry of Education after submitting his application. However, Jewad Selim intervened and personally approached the minister, requesting that he be appointed to a position in Baghdad so that he could remain at the institute. This request was accepted, allowing Ismail to begin attending the evening sessions.
1959 Graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts and obtained a diploma after four years, divided into two years of sculpture and two years of painting under the supervision of Jewad Selim and Faik Hassan.
1959 Ismail was engaged to his cousin and was teaching an art class at Eastern Middle School in Baghdad while waiting for his assignment to Italy. He had been nominated for this opportunity by his teacher, Jewad Selim. However, since there was only one spot available for studying ceramics, Ismail accepted it based on Jewad Selim's advice.
1960 Traveled to Italy and became deeply involved in his affairs there, to the point that he stopped communicating with his family. As a result, his engagement to his cousin was annulled. In Italy, he was introduced to the 'Academia di Belle Arti' (Academy of Fine Arts) and was accepted as a third-year student based on his high artistic talent. Initially, he had intended to start from the second year, and he continued to struggle with learning the Italian language.
17 November 1961 Wrote to his sister Nahida, from Rome, saying, "You must know that I am in the third year to study sculpture because I was accepted in the second year instead of the first, and now I am at the top of the class, the students from around the world, and I have done many works and I will send some pictures in the future. At the same time, I study pottery in the evening, but not the study that you are learning, but a recent study that has great importance for artistic pottery work." Then he says, "I have participated in several exhibitions and won several awards, and now I am preparing to participate in one of the exhibitions in Rome."
1962 Won the first prize for Arab artists in painting and the first prize for sculpture in Italy, and participated in several exhibitions in Rome.
1962 During his studies in Italy, he met his colleague Lisa (Marie Luise Schieck), who was born in 1941 in Oslo, Norway, and was accepted with him in the third year without going through the first and second years and graduated with him in the following year. They would present their thesis together as Ismail wrote in his letter (to his sister Nahida on 15 July 1962), and she was known after her marriage as Lisa Fattah. They married and had their first son, Suhail, in Italy. Lisa Fattah came to Iraq and lived with Ismail Fattah for thirty years and had another son, Ismail, and two daughters.
1962 Held a solo exhibition at the Today’s Artists Gallery in Rome and won the first prize for sculpture for foreign artists, as Ismail wrote to his sister Nahida on 15 July 1962, saying, “I have been chosen with ten foreign artists to participate in an exhibition of one of the galleries in Rome, and my works got the admiration and appreciation of the audiences, many newspapers wrote with recognition, and it was the beginning of my career launch after which I achieved great victories in art. I am waiting for the time to be in my country in order to instill the fruits of my works and artistic philosophy.”
1963-1964 Participated in the Annual Margeta Exhibition and won a prize, and graduated from the "Academia di Belle Arti – Academy of Fine Arts" with two degrees, one in ceramic art, of which his study period lasted for two years and a second degree in sculpture, which lasted another two years.
1965 Held a solo exhibition at Laurina Gallery in Rome and two solo exhibitions in Baghdad after his return from Italy, one in Al-Wasiti Hall and the other in the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, and held a solo exhibition in Gallery One in Beirut.
1966 Held a solo exhibition at the hall of the Baghdadi Society in Baghdad.
1969 Worked as a teacher of ceramics and then sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad, where he continued to work until the mid-nineties. He also joined the “Towards a New Vision Group” and participated in their first exhibition.
Since the 1970s, a series of his large sculptural and monumental works began decorating many public buildings and squares in Baghdad, including the façade of the Iraqi Lawyers Union, the Ministry of Industry, and the Ministry of Trade. He finished many monuments in bronze for the Iraqi Abbasid Painter Al-Wasiti, the Arabic philosopher Al-Farabi, the Abbasid poet Abu Nuwas, and the Iraqi poet Al-Rusafi.
1970-1975 Assigned to design, implement, and supervise a group of the main sculptural monuments of the Conference Palace in Baghdad, which took five continuous years to complete, as well as implementing the mural for the entrance of the Insurance Company.
1971 Headed the Iraqi Fine Artists Association for Abstract Art and remained its president for seven years, and participated in the Iraqi Art Exhibition in Kuwait.
1972 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad. Additionally, he designed and executed two monuments, one for the poet Abu Nuwas and another for the painter Yehya Al-Wasiti, which he completed within a short time.
1974 Participated in the 1st Arab Art Exhibition in Baghdad and the 1st April Art Exhibition in the hall of the Academy of Arts, and also participated in the 1st Arab Biennial in Baghdad.
1975 Participated in the 2nd April Art Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1976 was a year of full of many artistic activities inside and outside Iraq, including his participation in the Venice Biennial in Italy, as well as the New Delhi Triennial in India, the IAA Exhibition in Baghdad, the 2nd Arab Biennial in Rabat, Morocco, where the theme was "Palestine," he made a large head that combined drawing and sculpture, entitled “Head from the Holy Land,” and placed it on a sandy surface. Also, he participated in the 3rd April Art Exhibition in the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1977 Participated in the 4th April Art Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1978 Participated in an exhibition of 8 Arab artists at the Iraqi Cultural Center in London, as well as exhibiting his works at the 5th April Art Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1980 Participated in an exhibition of 12 Arab artists at the Faris Gallery in Paris, the exhibition of modern Iraqi sculpture at the Iraqi Cultural Center in Paris, and the 7th April Art Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1982 Participated in the 2nd Al-Wasiti Festival in Baghdad.
1983 Throughout his artistic career, he designed, participated in the implementation, and technically supervised the Martyrs' Monument project in collaboration with a Japanese design and supervision company, along with several contracting companies to realize the monument complex.
1986 Traveled to London to supervise the Iraqi Flag Monument, which was a subsidiary part of the Martyrs’ Monument.
1988 Held a solo exhibition of his recent works entitled “Homage to Jewad Selim” at the Kufa Gallery in London.
1990 Participated in the Iraqi Contemporary Art Exhibition in Cyprus.
1992 Participated in the exhibition "Three Iraqi Artists (Ismail Fattah, Lisa Fattah, Mohammad Mahruddin)" at Darat al Funun in Amman, and then his wife, Lisa Fattah, passed away after a long suffering with cancer, and was buried in Baghdad.
Years after the death of his first wife and following a psychological crisis due to Lisa's death and his children's relocation outside of Iraq, he married Dalia Shaker Mahmoud and had two sons with her.
1995 Held a solo exhibition at Darat al Funun in Amman. Traveled to Qatar and lived in Doha and remained there till the last years of his life, as he carried out several works of drawing and sculpture for the Qatar Museum of Arab Art, the most important of which were sculptural marble pieces in his distinctive style, depicting giant figures sitting, watching, and waiting in various colors.
2000 Participated in the exhibition “Magic of Moments in Nature and Place” at Gallery Art in Baghdad.
2004 Diagnosed with colon cancer and traveled to Abu Dhabi for treatment, and was hospitalized in Tawam Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine in Al-Ain city. In his last days, he insisted on returning to Baghdad to die and be buried next to his wife Lisa. An Emirati plane with medical staff had been assigned to transport him to Baghdad.
21 July 2004 Passed away on the grounds of the Baghdad International Airport at the age of seventy, and was buried in Baghdad as per his will.

- 1952-1953 درس فن الرسم في معهد الفنون الجميلة – القسم الصباحي في بغداد ويقول إسماعيل في حديثه مع عادل كامل "في المعهد كان لدينا درس الأعمال اليدوية يدرسنا فيه الأستاذ الشيخلي وكنا نشتغل بالطين، في الدرس الأول جذبتُ انتباه الشيخلي فأخذني إلى جواد سليم فقال لي الأخير: لابد أن تكون نحاتًا، وبالفعل وجهني جواد وكان له الفضل في كل ما حصل بعد ذلك".

- تم تنسيبه للعمل كمُدرس رسم في الناصرية من قِبل وزارة المعارف بعد أن قدّم أوراقه للعمل ولكن تدخل جواد سليم وذهب شخصياً إلى الوزير حتى يطلب منه أن يكون تنسيبه في بغداد حتى يكون على تواصل بالمعهد وتم قبول ذلك فبدأ يداوم إسماعيل في القسم المسائي.

- 1958-1959 تخرج من معهد الفنون الجميلة وحصل على الدبلوم بعد أربعة أعوام، عامين للنحت وعامين للرسم تحت يد وإشراف جواد سليم وفائق حسن.

- 1959 خطب ابنة خاله أثناء تدريسه درس الفنون في الإعدادية الشرقية في بغداد بانتظار بعثته، في نفس الوقت الذي كان ينتظر فيها بعثته إلى إيطاليا والتي رشحه لها أُستاذه جواد سليم، راجع دائرة البعثات متأخراً ولم يكن هنالك مكان شاغر فقط مقعد واحد لدراسة السيراميك. نصحه جواد سليم الذي ذهب معه إلى دائرة البعثات للقبول به والتغيير في إيطاليا بعد ذلك، فقبل به إسماعيل.

- 1960 سافر إلى إيطاليا ولم يسمع أهله خبراً منه في سنته الأُولى وتم فسخ خطبته من ابنة خاله. في إيطاليا قدّم وقُبِل طالباً في أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة "Academia di Belle Arti" في السنة الثالثة مباشرة حيث كان مستواه الفني عالي ولكن أراد هو البدء من السنة الثانية وظل يعاني من صعوبة تعلمه اللغة الإيطالية.

- 1961 كتب إسماعيل إلى أخته نهاد (ناهدة)، من روما في 17.11.1961 قائلاً " لابد وإنكِ تعلمين إني في الصف الثالث لدراسة النحت لإني قُبلتُ في الصف الثاني بدل الأول، وإني الآن في مقدمة الطلاب، أي طلاب العالم وقد عَملتُ أعمالاً كثيرة سوف أرسل بعض الصور في المستقبل، وفي نفس الوقت أدرسُ في المساء "الفخار" ولكن ليس الدراسة التي تتعلموها أنتم بل دراسة حديثة ولها أهميتها الكبرى بالنسبة لعمل الفخار الفني. ثم يقول" لقد اشتركت في عدة معارض وحزتُ على عدة جوائز والآن أستعد للاشتراك في إحدى المعارض في روما".

- 1962 فاز بالجائزة الأولى للفنانين العرب في الرسم والجائزة الأولى للنحت في إيطاليا واشترك في عدة معارض في روما.

- 1962 تعرّف خلال فترة دراسته في إيطاليا على زميلتهِ الفنانة ليزا (ماري لويز شييك) المولودة في عام 1941 في أوسلوا-النرويج والتي قبلت معه في الصف الثالث مباشرة بدون المرور بالصف الأول والثاني وتخرجت معه في العام التالي وسيقدمان أطروحتيهما سوية كما كتب إسماعيل في رسالته إلى (أخته ناهدة في 15.7.1962) والتي عُرفت بعد زواجها باسم ليزا فتاح وتزوجا وهم على مقاعد الدراسة ورزقوا بولدهم (صهيل) في إيطاليا، جاءت ليزا فتاح إلى العراق وعاشت مع إسماعيل فتاح لمدة ثلاثين عاماً ورزقوا بولد آخر (إسماعيل) وابنتين في بغداد.

- 1962 أقام معرض شخصي في كاليري "الفنانون اليوم" في روما وفاز في الجائزة الأُولى لفنان أجنبي عن فن النحت حيث كتب إسماعيل إلى أخته نهاد (ناهدة) في 15.7.1962 قائلاً " لقد اُخْتِرْتُ مع عشرة فنانين أجانب بدعوة من أحد الكاليريات وكانت أشغالي الفنية حدث كبير في هذا المعرض وقد كتبت الصحف بكثير من الإعجاب وكانت بداية انطلاقتي التي حققت بعدها انتصارات كبيرة في الفن. إني أنتظر الوقت الذي أكون فيه في بلادي لأغرس بهِ ثمرة أعمالي وفلسفتي الفنية".

- 1963 - 1964 عرض في معرض مارغيتا السنوي، وتخرج من أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة "Academia di Belle Arti" بشهادتين واحدة في فن السيراميك وكانت فترة دراسته لها لمدة سنتين وشهادة ثانية في فن النحت والتي استغرقت سنتين أخريين.

- 1965 أقام معرضاً شخصياً في لورينا كاليري في روما ومعرضين شخصيين في بغداد بعد عودته إليها من دراسته، في كل من قاعة الواسطي والمتحف الوطني للفن الحديث ومعرض شخصي في كاليري وان في بيروت.

- 1966 أقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الجمعية البغدادية في بغداد.

- 1969 عمل كمُدرس فن الخزف وبعدها فن النحت في أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في بغداد واستمر بالعمل هناك لمنتصف التسعينات وانضم إلى جماعة نحو الرؤية الجديدة واشترك في معرضهم الأول.

- منذ بداية السبعينات، بدأت سلسلة من نصب أعمال نحتية كبيرة زینت العديد من البنايات العامة والساحات ببغداد كواجهة اتحاد المحامين العراقيين، وزارة الصناعة، وزارة التجارة ولشعراء عراقيين كنُصُب الرسام الواسطي، الفيلسوف الفارابي، الشاعر العباسي أبو نؤاس، والشاعر الرصافي.

- 1970 - 1975 تم تكليفه تصميم وتنفيذ والإشراف الفني على مجموعة من النُصُب النحتية الرئيسية لقصر المؤتمرات في بغداد والتي استغرق العمل بها خمس سنوات متواصلة وجدارية لمدخل شركة التأمين.

- 1971 ترأس جمعية الفنانين العراقيين للفن التجريدي وبقي رئيسها لمدة سبع سنوات واشترك في معرض الفن العراقي في الكويت.

- 1972 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد. وقام بتصميم وتنفيذ نصبين واحد للشاعر أبي نؤاس والثاني للرسام يحيى الواسطي والذي أنجزه بفترة قصيرة.

- 1974 اشترك في معرض الفن العربي الأول في بغداد ومعرض نيسان الأول على قاعة أكاديمية الفنون وساهم أيضًا في معرض السنتين العربي الأول في بغداد.

- 1975 اشترك في معرض نيسان الثاني في المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1976 حفلت هذه السنة بالعديد من النشاطات الفنية داخل وخارج العراق منها، اشتراكه في بینالي فينيسيا في إيطاليا، وكذلك ترينالي نيو دلهي في الهند، ومعرض IAA في بغداد، والبينالي العربي الثاني في الرباط في المغرب وكان موضوع المعرض "فلسطين" فعمل رأساً كبيراً جمع فيه الرسم والنحت بعنوان "رأس من الأرض المقدسة" وتم وضعه على مساحة رملية، ومعرض نيسان الثالث في المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1977 اشترك في معرض نيسان الرابع في المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1983 خلال مسيرته الفنية، صمم وشارك في التنفيذ وأشرف فنيًا على مشروع نصب الشهيد بالاشتراك مع شركة تصميم وإشراف يابانية وعدة شركات مقاولات لتنفيذ مجمع النصب.

- 1986 سافر إلى لندن ليشرف على نصب الراية العراقية والذي كان جزءًا تابعاً لنصب الشهيد.

- 1988 أقام معرض شخصي لأعماله الأخيرة بعنوان "تحية لجواد سليم" في كاليري كوفة في لندن.

- 1990 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر في قبرص.

- 1992 اشترك في معرض " ثلاثة فنانين عراقيين (إسماعيل فتّاح، ليزا فتاح، محمد مهرالدين)" في دارة الفنون في عمان وبعدها تُوفيت زوجته الفنانة ليزا فتاح بعد معاناة طويلة مع مرض السرطان، ودُفنت في بغداد.

- بعد مرور سنوات على وفاة زوجته الأولى ومروره بأزمة نفسية نتيجة وفاة ليزا وسفر أولاده إلى خارج العراق، تزوج من السيدة داليا شاكر محمود ورزق منها بولدين.

- 1995 أقام معرضاً شخصياً في دارة الفنون في عمان. سافر إلى قطر وسكن في الدوحة وبقي لآواخر سنوات حياته حيث نفذ لمتحف قطر للفن العربي عدة أعمال رسم ونحت كان أهمها أعمال نحتية لشخوصه المعروفة وهي جالسة بحجم عملاق من مادة الرخام وبألوان مختلفة.

- 2000 اشترك في معرض سحر اللحظات في الطبيعة والمكان في كاليري آرت في بغداد.

- 2004 اكتشف إصابته بمرض سرطان القولون وسافر إلى أبو ظبي للعلاج ورقد في مستشفى (توام) في مدينة العين - قسم الباطنية. في أيامه الأخيرة أصرّ على العودة إلى بغداد ليموت فيها ويدفن جوار زوجته (ليزا) وقد خُصصت طائرة إماراتية مع طاقم طبي لنقله إلى بغداد.

- 21 يوليو 2004 لفظ أنفاسه الأخيرة على أرض مطار بغداد الدولي عن عمر يناهز السبعين عاماً، ودُفن فيها.
