His family's origins are traced back to the city of Tuwirej in Karbala Governorate, Iraq, and his full name is Ala Hussein Bashir Al-Jubouri. His father served as an officer in police and he was the Police Chief of Khademia District in Baghdad the reason that in Ala childhood he traveled between Iraqi cities accompanying his parents.
He worked as a professor and head of the reconstructive surgery Dept. at Nahrain University (formerly Saddam) in Baghdad, and he was the general supervisor of the Central Reconstructive Surgery Center in Baghdad and the head of the Scientific Council for Reconstructive Surgery in Baghdad and has issued and authored many researches, papers and studies in Reconstructive surgery.
1939 He was born in Khanaqin, Diyala Province. After that, his family moved to Al-Fadl district in Baghdad
1944 - 1956 He completed his primary, middle and high school studies in Baghdad schools.
1957 He was accepted to be a student at the College of Medicine - University of Baghdad.
1958 He participated in the exhibition that was held in the Olympic Club after the July 14 Revolution.
1959 - 1961 He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts for two years in the evening department while studying medicine.
1961 He held a joint exhibition with the artist Saadi Al-Kaabi.
1963 He graduated from the College of Medicine at the University of Baghdad with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) degree.
1970 He obtained a Certificate of Specialization in Reconstructive Surgery (FRCS Ed. - Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons) from Edinburgh, UK.
He worked as a professor and head of the reconstructive surgery branch at Saddam University, was the general supervisor of the Saddam Center for Reconstructive Surgery in Baghdad, head of the Scientific Council for Reconstructive Surgery in Baghdad, director of Al-Wasiti Hospital for Reconstructive Surgery, and he did several surgical studies and researches.
Even when he was a member of the Impressionists' group, his style was violent and deep and expressionist that tended to surrealism and used a lot of expressive symbolic themes. Most of his works show the deep human suffering and the calamities that the Iraqi people have suffered and that he used to go through over the days, and there are signs that are always repeated in his works such as crow, masks and terrified faces, which are all symbols and signs of what the Iraqi people and the artist were experiencing.
1973 He participated in the retrospective Iraqi art exhibition at the Hall of the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.

1976 - 1982 He participated in the exhibitions of the Fine Arts Directorate inside and outside Iraq.
1977 He participated in the itinerant contemporary Iraqi art exhibition in Bonn, Paris and London, and in the fourth April art exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1978 He participated in the New Delhi Triennial Exhibition in India and the fifth April art exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1979 He participated in the exhibition of sketches for the Mediterranean region in Tunis and the Baghdad International Poster Exhibition.
1980 He participated in the Baghdad International Poster Exhibition in London and the Biennale in Kuwait and held a solo exhibition at the Al-Riwaq Hall in Baghdad and won an appreciation award in the Arab Biennale Exhibition and participated in the seventh April art exhibition at the Hall of the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1981 A joint exhibition was held with the artist Muhammad Muhraddin.
1982 He participated in the Baghdad International Poster Exhibition in Paris, won the second prize in the competition, participated in the second Al-Wasiti Festival, and held a solo exhibition at Al-Riwaq Hall in Baghdad.
1982 - 1983 The former president wanted to choose a medical team for him, and 25 - 30 doctors were chosen, including the surgeon Ala Bashir, and they went to meet Saddam Hussein, after which Saddam asked to meet Ala again, so Ala went to the palace again and talked about the history of Iraq and art. Three days later, the general director of Ibn Sina Hospital called Ala and was informed that he had been chosen to be among Saddam's medical staff, and Ala said that this moment was the end of his freedom, as the artist said in his interview with Charlie Rose in 2006.
Ala became a close confidant to the former president and was fond of his art in which Saddam said that the artist’s works would be "a record of Iraq at (that) point in history" as stated by Hay Hill Gallery.
1984 He held a solo exhibition at Al-Riwaq Hall in Baghdad.
1986 He participated in the Baghdad International Festival for Fine Arts in Baghdad.
1987 He participated in the Festival de Cagnes sur Mer in France.
1988 He participated in the second Baghdad International Festival for Fine Arts in Baghdad and won the first prize.
In the eighties, the artist, the surgeon, excelled in restoring amputated limbs, especially in 1983 when he successfully performed an operation to restore a severed hand with a sharp instrument at Al-Wasiti Hospital (formerly called Emergency) in Baghdad. He also treated many patients who had suffered burns and deformities as a result of the Iran-Iraq war, the second Gulf War and the US invasion.
In the nineties, the artist began sculpting on clay in a surreal way, and the details of the human body were shown in a strong anatomical expressive way, expressing the pain and suffering of man from wars and pains from the way they form such as the head, face and hand.
1990 He participated in the Iraqi Contemporary Art Exhibition in Cyprus.
1992 He held a solo exhibition of sculpture in Baghdad.
1994 He held a solo exhibition of painting at Saddam Art Center in Baghdad.
1995 He held a solo exhibition of painting at Saddam Art Center in Baghdad.

1997 He held a solo exhibition entitled "Shadows of Truth" and won the Creativity Prize in Plastic Arts.
1998 Held two solo exhibitions for drawing and one for graphic, entitled "Ink on Paper", at Saddam Art Center in Baghdad.
1999 He held several solo exhibitions of painting and sculpture in Iraq, and he called it "The Pleasure". Then he toured several capitals outside Iraq, the Art Sima Gallery in Paris, the Bolton Gallery in London, the United Nations Center in New York and the Arts Palace in Vienna, and he was awarded the Order of the Flag.
2000 One of his sculptural works was chosen to be a monument in Baghdad called “The Meeting”. The monument consists of two rectangular stone blocks, facing and attached to the upper part with bends that suggest intimate embrace, which basically represents the embrace of a woman and a man, but the Iraqi Presidential Office issued in 2010 a law to demolish all monuments and statues built before the occupation of Iraq, and the monument was demolished in February of this year.
2002 A new monument to one of the artist’s sculptures entitled “The Scream” was built in the Amiriya area in Baghdad, symbolizing the Amiriya shelter incident in February 1991 during the period of the Second Gulf War. The shelter was bombarded by the US military forces and was completely destroyed and all the refugees who were inside were martyred. This sculptural work is to show a human head from among the gigantic solid stone blocks surrounding it, the facial skin tightened in excess, with tense surface features of many shades, while the composition of the mouth suggests an eternal stiff cry. The overall scene of this sculptural work stirs terror in the soul and moves emotions towards the extent of the hardship that the Iraqi people went through at the time. On the other hand, it imparts in mind the bitterness of a people's ongoing plight.
2018 He held a solo exhibition at the Artists Association in Nottingham, entitled "Illusion".
2019 He participated in the exhibition of Contemporary Artists from Iraq at Ras Al-Ain Gallery in Amman, Jordan.
January - March 2019 A solo exhibition called "The Times of Protrusions" was held at "Al Markhiya Gallery" in the "Katara Cultural Village" in Doha.
January 2019 A solo exhibition was held by Al-Markhiya Gallery, "Torsion Imaginations", at "Fire Brigades of the Artists Headquarters".

ترجع أصول عائلته الى قضاء طويريج بمحافظة كربلاء بالعراق واسمه الكامل علاء حسين بشير الجبوري، هو الإبن الوحيد لعائلته مع ابنتين، والده ضابط شرطة سابق، عمل مديراً لشرطة مدينة الكاظمية في بغداد، السبب الذي أدى بعلاء بشير الى التنقل في عّدة مدن عراقية مرافقاً أبويه.
جراح مشهور متخصص في الجراحة التقويمية، وفنان تشكيلي معروف. عمل أستاذاً ورئيساً لفرع الجراحة التقويمية في جامعة النهرين (صدام سابقاً) في بغداد، وكان المشرف العام على مركز الواسطي للجراحة التقويمية في بغداد ورئيس المجلس العلمي للجراحة التقويمية في بغداد وقام بإصدار وتأليف العديد من الأوراق البحثية والدراسات في الجراحة التقويمية.
1939 وُلد في مدينة خانقين في محافظة ديالى. وبعد ذلك انتقلت عائلته لتسكن في محلة الفضل في بغداد
1944-1956 أكمل دراسته الابتدائية والمتوسطة والثانوية في مدارس بغداد.
1957 قُبل طالباً في كلية الطب - جامعة بغداد.
1958 اشترك في المعرض الذي أقيم في النادي الأولمبي بعد ثورة 14 تموز.
1959 – 1961 درس في معهد الفنون الجميلة لمدة سنتين في القسم المسائي أثناء دراسته للطب.
1961 اقام معرض مشترك مع الفنان سعدي الكعبي.
1963 تخرّج من كلية الطب في جامعة بغداد بشهادة بكالوريوس الطب وبكالوريوس الجراحة (M.B.Ch.B).
1970 حاز على شهادة الاختصاص بالجراحة التقويمية (FRCS Ed. - Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons) من ادنبرة في بريطانيا.
عمل كأستاذ ورئيس فرع الجراحة التقويمية في جامعة صدام وكان المشرف العام على مركز صدام للجراحة التقويمية في بغداد ورئيس المجلس العلمي للجراحة التقويمية في بغداد ومدير مستشفى الواسطي للجراحة التقويمية وعمل دراسات وبحوث جراحية عدة.
حتى عندما كان منتمي لجماعة الانطباعيين، فأسلوبه كان تعبيري عنيف وعميق ينحو الى السريالية ويكثر من استخدام الثيمات الرمزية المعبرة. أكثر أعماله تبدي للعيان معاناة الانسان العميقة والفواجع التي عانى منها الإنسان العراقي والتي كان يمر بها على مر الايام وهنالك علامات تتكرر دائماً في أعماله مثل الغراب والأقنعة والوجوه المرعوبة وهي كلها رموز واشارات لما كان يعيشه الشعب العراقي والفنان.
1973 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي الشامل على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.

1981 اقام معرض مشترك مع الفنان محمد مهر الدين.
1982 اشترك في معرض بغداد الدولي للملصقات في باريس وحاز على الجائزة الثانية في المسابقة واشترك في مهرجان الواسطي الثاني واقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الرواق في بغداد.
1982 - 1983 أراد الرئيس السابق اختيار طاقم طبي له وتم اختيار 25 – 30 طبيب منهم الفنان الجراح علاء بشير وذهبوا ليلتقوا بصدام حسين وبعدها طلب صدام اللقاء بعلاء مرة اخرى فذهب علاء للقصر مرة اخرى وتكلموا عن تاريخ العراق والفن. بعدها بثلاث ايام، اتصل مدير عام مستشفى ابن سينا بعلاء وتم اخباره انه تم اختياره ليكون ضمن الطاقم الطبي الخاص بصدام وقال علاء ان هذه اللحظة كانت نهاية حريته كما قال الفنان في مقابلته مع تشارلي روز عام 2006.
أصبح علاء أحد الاشخاص المقربين من الرئيس السابق وقال صدام عن إن أعمال الفنان ستكون "سجلًا للعراق في (تلك) النقطة من التاريخ".
1984 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الرواق في بغداد.

في الثمانينات، أبدع الفنان الجراح بإعادة الأطراف المبتورة وخصوصاً في عام 1983 عندما تمكن بنجاح بإجراء عملية جراحية لإعادة يداً مقطوعة بآلة حادة في مستشفى الواسطي (الطوارئ - سابقاً) في بغداد. أيضاً عالج الكثير من المرضى الذين تضرروا من حروق وتشوّهات جراء الحرب العراقية الإيرانية وحرب الخليج الثانية والغزو الأمريكي.
في التسعينيات، بدأ الفنان النحت على طين الفخار بطريقة سريالية وأظهرت تفاصيل جسم الإنسان بطريقة تشريحية تعبيرية قوية ومعبرة عن ألم ومعاناة الأنسان من الحروب والألآم من طريقة شكلها وتكوينها كالرأس والوجه واليد.
1990 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر في قبرص.
1992 اقام معرض شخصي للنحت في بغداد.
1994 اقام معرض شخصي للرسم في مركز صدام للفنون في بغداد.
1995 اقام معرض شخصي للرسم في مركز صدام للفنون في بغداد.
1996 اقام معرض شخصي للرسم في مركز صدام للفنون في بغداد.
1997 اقام معرض شخصي بعنوان "ظلال الحقيقة" وحاز على جائزة الابداع في الفنون التشكيلية.
1998 اقام معرضين شخصيين للرسم وواحد للتخطيط بعنوان "حبر على ورق" في مركز صدام للفنون في بغداد.
1999 اقام عدة معارض شخصية للرسم والنحت في العراق واسماه "محنة" ثم قام بجولة على عدة عواصم خارج العراق، كَاليري ار سيما في باريس وفي كَاليري بولتن في لندن وفي مركز الامم المتحدة في نيويورك وفي قصر الفنون في فينا وحاز على وسام العلم.
2000 اختير واحد من اعماله النحتية لتكون نصب في بغداد بإسم "اللقاء" ويتكون النصب من كتلتين حَجَريّتين مستطيلتين، تكون مُتقابلتين ومُلتصقتين من الجزء العلوي مع انحناءات تُوحي بالعناق الحميم وهو ما يُمثِّل بالأساس عِناق امرأة ورَجُل ولكن تم اصدار قانون جديد من قبل ديوان الرئاسة العراقية في عام 2010 بتهديم النُصُب والتماثيل المُشيّدة قبل احتلال العراق فهدم النصب في شهر فبراير من ذاك العام.
2002 تم بناء نصب جديد لأحد اعمال الفنان النحتية بعنوان "الصرخة" في منطقة العامرية في بغداد وكان يرمز لحادثة ملجأ العامرية في فبراير عام 1991 خلال فترة حرب الخليج الثانية. تم قصف الملجأ للقصف من قبل القوات العسكرية الأمريكية وتم تدميره بالكامل واستشهد جميع اللاجئين الذين كانوا بداخله. يتَمَثّل هذا العمل النحتي بإظهار رأس إنسان من بين قوالب حجرية صخرية راسخة وعملاقة تحيط به و بَشَرَة الوجه مشدودة بإفراط قاسٍ مع معالم سطحيه متوتّرة كثيرة الظلال، اما تكوين الفم فيُوحي بصرخة متصلّبة أزلية. انّ المشهد الكلّي لهذا العمل النحتي يُثير الرعب في النفس ويحرّك المشاعر نحو مدى العُسْر الذي مرّ به الشعب العراقي آنذاك. ومن ناحية أخرى فإنه يطبع في الذهن مرارة مِحنة شعب مستمِرّة.
اقام معرض شخصي في جمعية الفنانين في مدينة نوتنغهام البريطانية اسماه "وهم".
2019 اشترك في معرض تشكيليون معاصرون من العراق في كاليري رأس العين في عمّان في الاردن.
يناير – آذار 2019 اقام معرض شخصي سماه "أزمنة النتوءات" في"غاليري المرخية" في "الحي الثقافي كتارا" في الدوحة.
يناير 2019 اقام معرض شخصي يقيمه غاليري المرخية "خيالات الالتواء"، في "مطافئ مقرّ الفنّانين".
