  • 1929 Artist Widad Al-Orfali was born in her grandfather's house in the Al-Orfaliyah district in the capital, Baghdad, Iraq.
  • 1936 She studied elementary school at Madam Adel School, then at Nuns School (later Al-Aqeedah), completed her primary and secondary school stages in Baghdad and began her interest in drawing in her childhood.
  • 1949-1950 Graduated from the American School in Baghdad and gave a speech at the graduation ceremony.
  • 1950-1952 Entered Beirut University for Women to study art and social studies for a period of three years.
  • 1952-1954 Worked as a teacher in Al-Karkh Kindergarten and Al-Saadoun Kindergarten.
  • She learned music for four years, and her teacher was Italian by origin, called "Aldo Kani".
  • 1956 Moved to Queen Alia College in Baghdad and completed the rest of her studies. In addition to the social studies B.A., she took art lessons. The artist Khaled Al-Jadir was her teacher, and her colleague was Kadhum Haider.
  • 1956 Participated in the Iraqi Fine Artist Association exhibition held at the Olympic Club.
  • 1957 Participated in "The Fine Arts" exhibition held at Al Mansoor Club and exhibited three oil paintings entitled "A Village, Flowers, Study" and participated in "The Rejections" exhibition held at the Women’s Union, which was visited by the late His Majesty King Faisal II who bought one of her paintings and placed it in his palace.

  • 1959-1962 Studied and graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts (Evening Section) in Baghdad, Iraq. Among her professors were notable artists such as Faik Hassan, Faraj Abbo, Ata Sabri, and Ismail Al-Chekhli. Her colleagues included the artist Mohammad Mahruddin. In her Anatomy class, she was taught by Dr. Nouri Bahjat, while Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Kilani taught her Sculpture. Artist Valentinos led her Ceramics class. Naziha Selim also served as a professor at the institute, and they formed a friendship. Additionally, she attended lessons by artist Jewad Selim in the sculpture hall, where she learned a great deal and was significantly influenced by the Pioneers Group.
  • 1961-1963 Worked in several places, including the School Illustrations Center, and took over the task of advertising in one of the factories. She became responsible for the Museum of the Heritage Directorate. She worked on documenting Iraqi folk industries and crafts, such as her research on the profession and market of engraving on copper in the seventies.
  • 1961 Participated in the second annual exhibition of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association and exhibited an oil painting.
  • 1962 Participated in the second annual exhibition of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association, where she showcased three oil paintings. After marrying diplomat Mr. Hameed Abbas Al-Azzawi, she traveled with him to several countries across Europe, Africa, and America, visiting many museums and art galleries along the way.
  • 1964 Held her first solo exhibition at La Redoute Club in Germany, where she exhibited 50 oil paintings. It was inaugurated by the Iraqi ambassador in Bon Jaber Omar, and among the attendees were the late His Majesty King Hussein bin Talal and German Chancellor Adenauer, who acquired one of her works.
  • 1966 Held a second solo exhibition in New York upon the invitation of the Friends of Middle East Association, and it was visited by the permanent representative of Iraq at the United Nations, Kadhum Al-Khalaf. The artist exhibited 25 oil paintings, 10 watercolors, and 25 sketches that were completed within 18 months, and her works reflected her new style in which she combined abstraction and realism in her works.
  • 1968 Held her third solo exhibition entitled "Tragedy of Palestine" at the Jordan Hotel in Amman. It was attended by the Prime Minister of Jordan, Bahjat Talhouni, and the theme of the exhibition was the Palestinian issue and the June setback, in which 50 paintings were exhibited.
  • 1969 Participated in a joint exhibition with Mrs. Murak Makai, by invitation from the British Parliament - London, England.
  • 1970 Participated in an exhibition organized by the Palestinian Artists Union on the anniversary of the Battle of Dignity in Amman. Among her most prominent paintings were "City of Tears," "Without Fathers," "Fedayeen for a Just Cause," and "Nothing but Horror."
  • 1970/1971 Held a fourth solo exhibition, entitled "Spring in Jordan," at the Qadis Gallery in Amman, Jordan, in which 50 paintings about spring were shown.
  • 1972 Studied enamel inlay on copper and Batik on cloth arts in Paris.
  • 1973 While accompanying her diplomat husband in Spain, she visited Andalusia, a southern region that marked a significant turning point in her artistic journey. She was inspired by the region's architecture, Islamic art, and the ornate decorations found in its palaces and mosques. Subsequently, she transitioned from an expressive and realistic style to one of fantasy, creating paintings of Arabesque designs and dreamlike Middle Eastern cities. In this new artistic direction, she discovered an aesthetic and cultural connection between Baghdad, her hometown, and the cities of Andalusia.
  • 1975 Held her fifth solo exhibition at the Jewad Selim Hall in the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
  • March 5, 1981 Held her sixth solo exhibition entitled "Ornaments from Arab Folklore," the debut of her new style, at Al-Wasiti Hall in Baghdad.
  • October 24, 1983 Al-Orfali Art Gallery was founded in Baghdad, which was considered the first private hall in Iraq. The gallery has supported and promoted the fine arts, as well as the performing and musical arts. Over the past two decades, it has hosted numerous cultural seminars, organized social and heritage events, and held dozens of artistic performances. On the day of the opening, she presented her seventh solo exhibition, titled “Cultural Embellishments.”
  • 1986 Held her eighth solo exhibition entitled "Inspired by Heritage" at the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation at the Hall of the Royal Cultural Center in Amman, Jordan.
  • 1991 Participated in an exhibition with other Arab artists in Amman, Jordan.
  • 1993 Held her ninth solo exhibition entitled "Fantasia 1" at Al-Orfali Art Gallery in Baghdad.

Today, she continues to refine her artistic and creative skills through her distinctive painting style, which is considered unique within the Iraqi and Arab art scenes.

  • 1929 ولدت الفنانة العراقية في منزل جدها في منطقة الأورفلية في العاصمة بغداد في العراق.
  • 1936 درست الابتدائية في مدرسة "مدام عادل" ثم في مدرسة الراهبات (العقيدة لاحقاً) وأكملت مراحل دراستها الابتدائية والثانوية في بغداد وبدأ اهتمامها بالرسم منذ طفولتها.
  • 1949 – 1950 تخرجت من المدرسة الأمريكية في بغداد وألقت كلمة خلال حفل التخرج.
  • 1950 - 1952 دخلت جامعة بيروت للبنات لدراسة الفن والخدمة الاجتماعية لمدة ثلاث سنوات.

  • تعلمت الموسيقى لمدة أربع سنوات وكان أستاذها إيطالي الأصل يدعى "الدو كاني".
  • 1956 انتقلت إلى كلية الملكة عالية في بغداد وأكملت دراستها الجامعية بالإضافة لدراسة الخدمة الاجتماعية، درست الفن وكان الفنان خالد الجادر معلمها وكان زميلها في المرسم الفنان كاظم حيدر.

  • 1959 – 1962 درست وتخرجت أيضاً من معهد الفنون الجميلة) القسم المسائي (في بغداد، العراق وكان من أساتذتها الفنانين فائق حسن وفرج عبو وعطا صبري وإسماعيل الشيخلي ومن زملائها الفنان محمد مهر الدين. كان معلمها في درس التشريح هو الفنان الدكتور نوري مصطفى بهجت وبالنحت الفنان الدكتور عبد الرحمن الكيلاني والخزف الفنان فالنتينوس وكانت نزيهة سليم أستاذة في المعهد وتكونت بينهم صداقة وكانت تزور دروس الفنان جواد سليم في قاعة النحت في المعهد حتى تتعلم منه فتأثرت كثيراً بالرواد.
  • عملت في عدة أماكن منها مركز وسائل الإيضاح المدرسية، تولت مهمة الدعاية والإعلان في أحد المصانع من 1961 لغاية 1963، وأصبحت مسؤولة متحف مديرية التراث الشعبي واشتغلت على توثيق الصناعات والحرف الشعبية العراقية مثل بحثها عن سوق الصفارين ومهنة الطرق على النحاس في السبعينات.

  • 1964 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الأول على قاعة لاريدوت في ألمانيا عرضت فيه 50 لوحدة زيتية وأفتتحه السفير العراقي في بون جابر عمر وزاره جلالة الملك حسين بن طلال والمستشار الألماني اديناور واقتنى أحد أعمالها.
  • 1966 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الثاني في نيويورك بدعوة من جمعية أصدقاء الشرق الأوسط وزارة ممثل العراق الدائم في الأمم المتحدة كاظم الخلف، عرضت الفنانة وداد 25 لوحة زيتية و10 لوحات مائية و25 تخطيطاً تم إنجازهم خلال 18 شهراً وكانت أعمالها تعكس أسلوبها الذي جمعت فيه التجريد بالأعمال والواقعية.
  • 1968 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الثالث بعنوان "النكسة في صور" في فندق الأردن في عمان وحضره رئيس وزراء الأردن بهجت التلهوني وكان موضوع المعرض عن القضية الفلسطينية ونكسة حزيران وعرضت فيه 50 لوحة.
  • 1969 أقامت معرض مشترك مع السيدة موراك مكاي, بدعوة من البرلمان البريطاني في لندن.
  • 1970 اشتركت في معرض نظمه اتحاد الفنانين الفلسطينيين في ذكرى معركة الكرامة في عمان ومن أبرز لوحاتها كانوا "مدينة الدموع" و"بلا أباء" و"فدائيون من أجل قضية عادلة" و "لا شيء إلا الرعب".
  • 1970/1971 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الرابع بعنوان "الربيع في الأردن" في كَاليري قادس في عمان، الأردن وعرضت فيه 50 لوحة عن الربيع.
  • 1972 تلقت تدريبات على فنون تطعيم المينا في النحاس، وفن الباتيك على القماش في باريس.
  • 1973 وأثناء تواجدها برفقة زوجها الدبلوماسي في إسبانيا، قامت بزيارة الى إقليم الأندلس في الجنوب، تلك الزيارة شكّلت انعطافه كبيرة في فنها. تأثرت بالفن الأندلسي المعماري والزخارف الإسلامية في القصور والمساجد الأندلسية. تحولت من الأسلوب التعبيري والواقعي إلى أسلوب الفنتازيا وذلك برسم الزخارف والمنمنمات ومدن الأحلام الشرقية. ووجدت تلاقياً جمالياً وحضارياً بين بغداد مدينتها ومدن الأندلس.
  • 1975 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الخامس على قاعة جواد سليم في المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.
  • 5 مارس 1981 أقامت أول معرض شخصي لأسلوبها الجديد ولكنه سادس معرض شخصي لها بعنوان "منمنمات من التراث العربي" على قاعة الواسطي في بغداد.
  • 24 أكتوبر 1983 أسّست الفنانة قاعة الأورفلي للفنون في بغداد والتي تُعتبر أول قاعة خاصة في العراق. اهتمت ورعت الفنون التشكيلية بالإضافة إلى الفنون المسرحية والموسيقية وأقامت العديد من الندوات الثقافية ونظمت الكثير من الفعاليات الاجتماعية والتراثية وأقيم فيه عشرات المناسبات الفنّية على مدى عقدين من الزمن. أقامت في كَاليري الأورفلي في بغداد معرضها الشخصي السابع بعنوان "تهاويل تراثيه" في نفس يوم افتتاح الكَاليري.

  • 2011 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الواحد والعشرون وإطلاق ألبوم موسيقي من تأليفها بعنوان "أنغام عربية - رحلة من الأندلس إلى بغداد" على قاعه فور والز في دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة.
  • 2011 أقامت معرضها الشخصي الثاني والعشرون وتوقيع ألبومها الموسيقي "أنغام عربية" في كَاليري الأورفلي في عمان، الأردن.
  • 2015 أصدرت كتاب مذكرات بعنوان "سوالف". كَاليري الأورفلي في عمان، الأردن.
  • 2017 أصدرت كتاب "خواطر" يضم مجموعه من الأشعار والخواطر وكلمات أغاني من تأليفها في كَاليري الأورفلي في عمان، الأردن.
  • تهتم الفنانة بالفنون التشكيلية وتعتبر رائدة من رواد الفن التشكيلي مع اهتمامها أيضا بالفنون الموسيقية وتنظيم المناسبات الثقافية وإدارة قاعة للفنون والتي لعبت دوراً إيجابياً كبيراً في دعم الحركة التشكيلية العراقية في الثمانينات والتسعينات. وتستمر بتطوير فنها ومهاراتها المميزة في الأسلوب الذي تفردت به على الساحة التشكيلية العراقية والعربية أيضاً.
