1943 Born in Amarah, Maysan Governorate, southern Iraq. His first teacher was his older brother, Mahmoud Hussein, who graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in 1954.
1959 While still in middle school, Naji held a solo exhibition of his drawings and was awarded the Leader Abdul Karim Qasim Prize for Best Work (Oil on Board).
1967 Obtained a Diploma in Painting from the Institute of Fine Arts, Baghdad.
1967-1971 Completed his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad, where he learned from prominent Iraqi artists of the 1960s, including Faik Hassan, Kadhim Haidar, Faraj Abbo, Naziha Selim, and Ismail Fattah, and graduated from it.
1974 Approved and was accepted to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. However, the nationalization of oil prevented Iraqis from obtaining the necessary permits to complete their studies in France, and thus, they were prevented from continuing. He returned to Iraq and continued his work as an artist and teacher.
He was appointed to Iraqi Television in the decoration department with artist Suhail al-Hindawi.
1975 Participated in the Radio and Television Exhibition in the Gulbenkian Hall at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1976 Participated in a joint exhibition with artist Qutaiba Hussein and the Portrait Exhibition in the Gulbenkian Hall at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1977 Participated in the Landscape Exhibition in the Gulbenkian Hall at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad.
1980 Participated in the Wasiti Festival of the Ministry of Information and Culture.
1984 Participated in the Wasiti Festival of the Ministry of Information and Culture.
1985 Participated in the Fine Arts Day Festival and the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition of the Ministry of Information and Culture.
1995 Participated in the July Exhibition at the Al-Wasiti Hall, Baghdad.
1996 Participated in the Babylon Festival at the Arts Center of the Ministry of Information and Culture.
1998 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition, Paris, France, and Austria.
1999 Participated in the Sketches Exhibition at the Arts Center, Baghdad.
2000 Participated in the Arabian Gulf Exhibition in the UAE and the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition, Qatar.
2001 Participated in a joint exhibition with a Moroccan artist at the Palm Palace, Marrakesh, Morocco.
2002 Participated in an exhibition with Moroccan artists called ‘Small Works’ at the Marrakesh Atelier, Morocco.
2003 Held a solo exhibition at the House of Culture, Marrakesh.
2004 Participated in an exhibition with Iraqi artists at the Damascus Gallery, Syria.
2006 Participated in the First Fine Arts Exhibition, ‘Call of Hope’, at the Department of Arts, the Retrospective Fine Arts Exhibition at the Department of Arts, and the Photo Exhibition about Iraq at the British Embassy, Baghdad. He received a certificate from the Iraqi Artists Syndicate.
2009 Participated in the ‘Lost Treasure’ Exhibition at the Ministry of Culture.
2010 Taught at the Institute of Fine Arts, morning shift, and headed the Painting Department until his retirement. He participated in the International Women's Day Exhibition at the Arts Department.
2012 Received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Institute of Fine Arts for Girls in Baghdad.
2015 Participated in the Baghdad in the Eyes of its Creators Exhibition at the Iraqi Fine Artists Association.
2016 Participated in the Annual Comprehensive Exhibition of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association, the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Arts Center, and the Iraqi Cultural Week Exhibition at the Sfax Festival, Tunisia.
2017 Participated in the Victory Day of the Final Statement Exhibition at the Arts Center and received a Certificate of Appreciation for the ‘Best Tidings of the Final Statement of Victory’. He was awarded the Intellectual Medal on the occasion of the Third Iraqi Intellectuals' Day in Amarah, Iraq.
2018 Participated in the 12th Al-Wasiti Fine Art Exhibition at the Arts Center.
2020 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Arts Center.
2021 Participated in the Founding of the Iraqi State Exhibition.
2023 Held his third solo exhibition, ‘Iraqi Tales’, at the Gulbenkian Hall of the National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad. The Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities sponsored the exhibition. 80 works were displayed.
He currently lives in Iraq, devoting his time to his artistic endeavors.

- 1943 وُلِد الفنان في مدينة العمارة، محافظة ميسان، جنوب العراق. كان أستاذه الأول شقيقه الأكبر، محمود حسين، الذي تخرج من معهد الفنون الجميلة عام 1954.
- 1959 أقام ناجي، وهو لا يزال في المرحلة المتوسطة، معرضًاً شخصياً لرسوماته، وحصل على جائزة الزعيم عبد الكريم قاسم لأفضل عمل (زيت على خشب).
- 1967 حصل على دبلوم رسم من معهد الفنون الجميلة في بغداد.
- 1967-1971 أكمل دراسة الفنون في اكاديمية أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في جامعة بغداد ودرس على يد نخبة فناني الستينات في العراق مثل فائق حسن وكاظم حيدر وفرج عبو ونزيهة سليم وإسماعيل فتاح، وتخرج منها.
- 1974 قُبل للدراسة في المدرسة الوطنية العليا للفنون الجميلة في باريس. إلا أن تأميم النفط حال دون حصول العراقيين على التصريحات اللازمة لإكمال دراسته في فرنسا، مما حال دون مواصلة دراسته. فعاد إلى العراق وواصل عمله كفنان ومعلم.
