1928 Born in Baghdad, Iraq, to a Kurdish family. Due to his father's job, which required frequent transfers, and his mother's illness, the little boy was raised by his aunt, who was married to the renowned historian and staff officer Mohammad Amin Zaki. His childhood was challenging due to his mother's inability to care for him and the limited time he could spend with his father.
1941 Studied at the Mamounia School, but he did not stay for long due to the events of May 1941, so he moved to Salman Pak to live with his father, and he really loved fishing.
1944 Entered King Faisal II College to study art there under the supervision of the artist Ata Sabri. He became an art teacher.
He worked, for a very short period, at the Baghdad Studio Film Company and helped prepare the fashion and decorative designs for the movie "Alia and Essam."
1946 Began photography as a hobby when someone gave him a camera as a gift.
1948 Demonstrations took place, and the demonstrators attacked the college, expelled students, and destroyed everything in it.
1954 The artist was surprised when authorities appeared in front of his house and asked to interrogate him. During the search, they found a book titled "Noise in the Philosophy Row" by George Hanna, which was meant for his brother-in-law, and confiscated it. They also discovered "Anton Chekhov's Book" by Shaker Khasbak, the designer of its cover, as well as another book about cooking. He was taken to the Kadhimiya police station and was referred to court a week later. He was released due to a lack of evidence.
Later that same year, he participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition in Beirut alongside Jewad Selim and Faik Hassan, where he showcased some of his photography.
1956 Participated in the Pioneers Group exhibition. It was the first time they exhibited photography in an art exhibition in Iraq.
1957 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the UNESCO Hall in Beirut, where he exhibited ten photographic works.
1958 Held a solo exhibition of photography in Baghdad and participated in the fifth exhibition of the Pioneers Group at the hall of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association.
1959 Held a solo exhibition of photography at the Olympic Club, inaugurated by the president of the republic, Abdel-Karim Qasim.
At the beginning of the sixties, he established the ‘Office of Thinayan and Ramzi for Advertising’ with Yahya Thinayan.
1964 Traveled to Paris. He stayed for two years but continued to travel back and forth to Baghdad. In Paris, he was with a group of Iraqi Artists: Khaled Al-Jadir, Jamil Hammoudi, and Aradash Kakafian. Since they were living there, their meeting place was in the Dibar Café on Rue Mont Saint-Michel.
1965 Established Ramzi for Printing and Advertising in Baghdad.
1969 Arrested for a short period in Qasr al-Nihaya and tortured on charges of espionage. He was then released due to a lack of evidence.
1970 Held a solo caricature exhibition in Baghdad.
1972 Participated in the Mural Posters Exhibition.
1975 Held a solo exhibition of caricatures at the hall of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association in Baghdad.
1977 Held a solo exhibition of photography at the Iraqi Cultural Center in London and created a book for his photographic works entitled "Iraq: The Land and the People."
1981 Established an Arab Art magazine, Funon Arabia, and published its first issue. Its president was Jabra Ibrahim Jabra. The design director was Dia al-Azzawi. Hashem Samarchi worked in both the editorial and art departments alongside other people.
1988 After leaving Iraq, he relocated to London and opened a small printing business named Art Scan.
2009 Wrote a book for his photographic works entitled "Iraq: Photographs of Some Features of Life in the Twentieth Century."
2010 Wrote a book for his photographic works, entitled "My Tour with the Camera," issued by Al-Adib House for Press and Publishing in Amman.
18 September 2013 Passed away in London at the age of eighty-five.

1928 ولد الفنان المصور الفوتوغرافي في العاصمة بغداد في العراق لعائلة كردية وبسبب طبيعة عمل والده وتنقله من مكان إلى آخر ومرض والدته، تربى الولد الصغير مع خالته زوجة المؤرخ المعروف وضابط الركن محمد أمين زكي. كانت طفولته صعبة بسبب عدم قدرة والدته بالعناية به وعدم رؤية والده بالقدر الكافي.
1941 درس في المدرسة المأمونية ولكنه لم يبقى طويلاً بسبب أحداث مايس 1941 فأنتقل إلى سلمان باك ليسكن عند والده وكان يحب صيد الأسماك كثيراً.
1944 دخل كلية الملك فيصل الثاني، ودرس الفن فيها على يد الفنان عطا صبري الذي كان حينها معلم الرسم.
عمل لمدة قصيرة جداً في شركة استوديو بغداد للأفلام وساعد بتحضير تصاميم الأزياء والديكورات فيلم "عليا وعصام".
1946 بدأ بالتصوير الفوتوغرافي كهواية عندما أهداه أحدهم كاميرا كهدية.
1948 حدثت مظاهرات وهجم المتظاهرون على الكلية وطردوا الطلاب وخربوا كل شيء فيها.
1954 تفاجأ الفنان بوجود أشخاص من الجهة الأمنية أمام منزله وطلبوا تفتيشه فعثروا على كتاب "ضجة في صف الفلسفة لجورج حنا" كان لزوج أخته فصادروه وكتاب أنطوان تشيخوف لشاكر خصباك الذي صمم غلافه وكتاب آخر عن الطبخ فأخذوه لمركز شرطة الكاظمية وأحالوه إلى المحكمة بعد أسبوع تم الافراج عنه لقلة الأدلة. في نفس العام اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر في بيروت مع جواد سليم وفائق حسن وعرض فيه صور فوتوغرافية.
1956 اشترك في معرض الرواد وكان أول معرض للرسم تعرض فيه الصور الفوتوغرافية.
1957 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر على قاعة اليونيسكو في بيروت وعرض فيه عشرة أعمال فتوغرافية.
1958 أقام معرضاً شخصياً للفوتوغراف في بغداد واشترك في المعرض الخامس لجماعة الرواد على قاعة جمعية الفنانين العراقيين.
1959 أقام معرض شخصي للفوتوغراف في النادي الأولمبي افتتحه عبد الكريم قاسم.
في بداية الستينات، أسس مع يحيى ثنيان مكتب ثنيان ورمزي للدعاية والإعلان.
1964 سافر إلى باريس و بقي لمدة سنتين، ويتردد على بغداد. في نفس الفترة التي كان كل من الفنانين خالد الجادر وجميل حمودي وأرداش كاكافيان يدرسون في المعاهد الفنية في باريس، فجمعتهم معاً جلسات ولقاءات وحوارات عمّقت تجربتهم في حقل الفن والتصميم وتاريخهما. وكان مكان لقاءهم في مقهى "الديبار" في شارع مون سان ميشيل.
1965 أسّس تأسيس مؤسسة رمزي للطباعة والإعلان في بغداد.
1969 اعتقل لفترة قصيرة في قصر النهاية وتم تعذيبه بتهمة التجسس ومن ثم أفرج عنه لعدم توفر الأدلة.
1970 أقام معرضاً شخصياً للكاريكاتور في بغداد.
1972 اشترك في معرض الملصقات الجدارية.
1975 أقام معرضاً شخصياً للكاريكاتور على قاعة جمعية الفنانين العراقيين في بغداد
1977 أقام معرضاً شخصياً للفوتوغراف في المركز الثقافي العراقي في لندن. وأصدر كتابه الأول والذي وثّق فيه مجموعة منتقاة من الصور الفوتوغرافية التي التقطها أثناء جولته في مدن العراق وأريافه في الخمسينات والستينات بعنوان "العراق الأرض والناس". يُعد كتابه هذا من المصادر المرجعية في تاريخ التصوير الفوتغرافي العراقي والعربي.
1981 أنشأ مجلة فنون عربية وأصدر أول عدد لها وكان رئيسها جبرا ابراهيم جبرا ومدير التصميم ضياء العزاوي وهاشم سمرجي في قسم التحرير والقسم الفني مع أشخاص آخرين.
1988 قرر الانتقال للعمل والعيش في لندن وفتح مكتب طباعة صغير اسمه "آرت سكان".
2009 أصدر كتابه الثاني والذي ضمّ أعمال مختارة للصورالفوتوغرافية التي التقطها من الحياة في العراق بعنوان "العراق – لقطات فوتوغرافية لبعض ملامح الحياة في القرن العشرين".
2010 أصدر كتابه الثالث لأعماله الفوتوغرافية بعنوان "جولتي مع الكاميرا" الصادرة عن دار الأديب للصحافة والنشر في عمان.
18 سيبتمبر2013 توفى الفنان في لندن عن عمر يناهز الخمسة وثمانون عاماً.
