1924 Born in Baghdad to a simple family. His father worked as a carpenter and supported Ismail in choosing to study what he loved.
1944 Studied and graduated from high school with distinction. He used to go to the Institute of Fine Arts in the evening to study. One of his professors was the artist Faik Hassan.
1945 Graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and joined the Pioneers Group. He participated in the exhibition of the Friends of Art Association in the hall of the British Cultural Center and exhibited a painting entitled "A Personal Portrait".
1947 Was appointed assistant to professor Faik Hassan at the Institute of Fine Arts. In the same year, he received a mission to Paris to study at the National School of Fine Arts (Beaux-Arts) and graduated in 1951.
While in Paris, Ismail Al-Chekhli lived in the Montparnasse neighborhood, which was known for its old cafes that served as a meeting place for intellectuals and artists from around the world. Paris was a hub for artistic and cultural creativity, making it an attractive destination for individuals seeking inspiration. Ismail Al-Chekhli took advantage of his time in Paris to meet and interact with many renowned artists. Some of these renowned figures included Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and others.
1948 Participated in the Iraqi Art Exhibition in Beirut, in which he exhibited two paintings.
1950 Participated in the first exhibition of the Pioneers Group, which was held at the home of Dr. Khalid Al-Qassab in Baghdad.
1952 Returned to Baghdad and participated in the Pioneers Group exhibition as well as a Beirut exhibition in Lebanon.
1953 Married a French artist named "Suzanne" who bore his family name "Al-Chekhli." In the same year, he participated in the first Alexandria exhibition in Egypt.
1955 Participated in the itinerant Iraqi exhibition in India, exhibiting three paintings and seven lithographs.
1956 With other artists, he co-founded the Iraqi Plastic Artists Association and participated in the Baghdad Exhibition for Painting and Sculpture at Al-Mansour Club, in which he exhibited five paintings.
1957 Participated in the Iraqi Art Exhibition in Beirut, and exhibited three paintings.
1958 Participated in the itinerant exhibition in China, the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Poland, and Yugoslavia. He also participated in the Baghdad Exhibition for Painting and Sculpture in Al-Mansour Club and displayed five paintings.
1968 Participated in the exhibition "The Battle" in the hall of the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist worked as a professor of graphic art at the Academy of Fine Arts. Later, he was appointed as the Head of the Department of Fine Arts at the Ministry of Culture and Information.
1972 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Hall of the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1973 Participated in the fifteenth Iraqi Plastic Artists’ Association at their hall in Baghdad.
1974 Participated in the First Arab Biennial Exhibition in Baghdad.
1976 Participated in an exhibition against racial discrimination in Baghdad.
1978 The French state awarded him the Order of Literature and Arts.
1981 Participated in the exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture in Iraq.
1986 Was appointed as Director of the Department of Fine Arts in the Ministry of Culture and Chairman of the National Committee for Fine Arts in Iraq.
1995 A retrospective was held for him at the Saddam Center for the Arts in Baghdad.
2002 Passed away in Baghdad at the age of seventy-eight.
2012 His works were exhibited at the exhibition "Fifty Years of Love for France and Iraq," which was held at the French Institute in Baghdad.
Member of the Iraqi Plastic Artists Association.

- 1924 ولد الفنان إسماعيل الشيخلي في العاصمة بغداد في العراق من عائلة بسيطة حيث كان والده يعمل نجاراً، وكان مسانداً لابنه بأن يختار أن يدرس ما يحبه.

- 1944 أكمل دراسته وتخرج من الإعدادية بتفوق، وكان يذهب إلى معهد الفنون الجميلة في المساء ليدرس وأحد أساتذته كان الفنان فائق حسن.

- 1945 تخرج من معهد الفنون الجميلة في بغداد وانضم إلى جماعة الرواد، واشترك في معرض جمعية أصدقاء الفن على قاعة المركز الثقافي البريطاني وعرض فيه لوحة بعنوان "صورة شخصية".

- 1947 تم تعيينه أستاذاً مساعداً للفنان فائق حسن في معهد الفنون التشكيلية وفي نفس العام حصل على بعثة إلى باريس ليدرس في المدرسة الوطنية للفنون الجميلة (البوزار) وتخرج منها عام 1951.

- في باريس كان حي المونبرناس ومقاهيه القديمة ملتقى المثقفين والفنانين من جميع أنحاء العالم وكانت باريس محجّة للإبداع الفني والثقافي، استقر إسماعيل الشيخلي هناك طيلة فترة إقامته في باريس فكانت فرصة أن يختلط بالكثير من وجوه هذا المجتمع وأحدهم بابلو بيكاسو، و"جورج براك" وغيرهم.

- 1948 اشترك في المعرض الفني العراقي في بيروت وعرض فيه لوحتين.

- 1950 اشترك في المعرض الأول لجماعة الرواد الذي أقيم في منزل د. خالد القصاب في بغداد.

- 1952 رجع إلى بغداد واشترك في معرض جماعة الرواد في بغداد ومعرض بيروت في لبنان.

- 1953 تزوج من فنانة فرنسية اسمها "سوزان" والتي حملت اسم عائلته "الشيخلي" واشترك في معرض الإسكندرية الأول في مصر.

- 1955 اشترك في المعرض العراقي المتجول في الهند وعرض فيه ثلاث لوحات وسبع لوحات ليثوغراف.

- 1956 أسس مع فنانين آخرين جمعية الفنانين العراقيين، واشترك في معرض بغداد للرسم والنحت في نادي المنصور وعرض فيه خمس لوحات.

- 1957 اشترك في المعرض الفني العراقي في بيروت وعرض فيه ثلاث لوحات.

- 1958 اشترك في المعرض المتجول في الصين، الاتحاد السوفيتي، بلغاريا، بولونيا ويوغوسلافيا واشترك في معرض بغداد للرسم والنحت في نادي المنصور وعرض فيه خمس لوحات.

- 1968 اشترك في معرض "المعركة" على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- من الستينات لغاية السبعينات، عمل الفنان كأستاذ فن رسم في أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة وتعين بعدها كرئيس قسم الفنون التشكيلية في وزارة الثقافة والإعلام.

- 1972 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1973 اشترك في معرض جمعية الفنانين التشكيليين الخامس عشر على قاعة الجمعية في بغداد.

- 1974 اشترك في معرض السنتين العربي الأول في بغداد.

- 2002 توفي الفنان في بغداد عن عمر يناهز الثمانية والسبعين عاماً.
