Artspace Hamra presents BETWEEN RIVERS an exhibition of painting and photography by Leila Kubba Kawash Ihsan Jezany “Everything has not been lost, but everything has sensed that it might perish.” Paul Valery’s thought sums up the collaboration between Leila Kubba Kawash and Ihsan Jezany’s salute to the Iraqi marshes. Too often omitted from histories and suffering from the ravages of war on Iraq, Leila Kubba Kawash’s paintings give us a sense of passing through a disappearing landscape while Ihsan Jezany’s photography countersigns the painting with forlorn gazes of a life passing away. Whether lines mark over a silhouetted landscape or indigenous inhabitants wear a sense of futility etched on their faces: the ecology of the marshes are enduring a disappearing aesthetic.
