  • Mohamed Aref was born in 1937 in Rawanduz, Erbil province
  • In 1956, he received a diploma from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad
  • In 1967 he received his master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts with a degree of excellence in Moscow .
  • In 2004 he received his doctorate in art philosophy with distinction from Salahaldin University in Erbil.
  • Worked as a Professor of at the Institute of Fine Arts and Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad and Babil,  Iraq.
  • Member of the artist Union, and Association of fine Artists.
  • Member  of  the Baghdad Group for Modern art.
  • Taught  Art at the Institute of Fine Arts, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad and Erbil.
  • Professor (Faculty of Engineering - Architectural Department) and a professor at Salahuddin University.
  • A professor at SalahAldin university
  • Founder and the Dean of the collage of Fine Arts in Erbil 2004
  • In 2001 he won the state Prize For Artistic creation for  his Retrospective exhibition (1961-2001).
  • Professor in the department of Graduate studies at the collage of Fine Arts.
  • Held three personal exhibitions in the soviet Union 1961- 1967.
  • Participated since  1969 in exhibitions of the Iraqi  Artist Association and the Baghdad international  Biennale 1986 – 1988.
  • Exhibitions of Iraqi  contemporary Art in : Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Algeria, Syria, Morocco, Tunisia, Soviet Union, East Germany, England, France, and the Triennial in India.
  • He wrote 48 books in the field of art and translated 23 books from Russian to Arabic and Kurdish.
  • Published a book on Sketching in Both Arabic and Kurdish Languages.
  • Translated (Michael Angelo) from Russian to Kurdish – 1981
  • Translated (Delacroix) from Russian to Kurdish – 1983
  • Translated (Rubens & Millet) from Russian to Kurdish – 1986
  • Translated (the Foundation of Academic Art)  from Russian to Kurdish – 1995
