The Travelling of Iraqi Art

I called upon myself to write about my views on discussions taking place here and there concerning the travelling of Iraqi art, and far from critical views, which I leave to those interested.

The beginnings of the modern Iraqi art were in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Baghdadi families were the first collector and promoter (i.e. the middle class of that modern civil society), along with foreign and Arab people who were passionate about these production. After 1958, Iraqis that found in the new regime a climate in which they could not coexist, emigrated from Iraq. They took with them their Collectibles and painting and movable statues were among them. In every period that followed there were those who began emigrating from Iraq and I repeat the paintings were among the immigrants. At the end of the fifties, Gulbenkian an Iraqi donated a building for the modern art and so the state began to acquire the artworks of artists to form a permanent collection for it.I would like to emphasize here that Iraqi art was not confined to that collection, the largest number was In Iraqi homes, this collection had precious Iraqi artworks from the most important periods of the 40s , 50’s ,60s and the 70’s in particular, We then witnessed  in 2003 with great sadness and anger the  destruction of that collection  which was Our only memorable memory, and the official departments in Iraq  were not interested in documenting those  efforts  in books and other publications, except what was printed by the artists as simple  guides to their personal exhibitions , which were at that time limited in documentation to  information found in photography.

Iraq went through a suffocating financial hardship during the embargo from the beginning of the nineties till 2003, this  forced the owners of artworks  to sell their collectables . The only country that welcomed the Iraqis was Jordan, which then became a market for the sales of Artworks  and whoever was passionate about these works came there and bought what was for sale,Not All the artworks were of the of the same value, a number of them needed consultation , in particular private collection  owners,  I remember the role of  Iraqi artist Diaa al-Azzawi in providing his advice to the collection of  Sheikh Hassan al-Thani, and to this day  we are  proud of the Iraqi wing at the Museum of Modern Arab Art in Qatar, it  is the biggest part of our memory  that lived after  the destruction, Not to mention the other collection such as  Kenda  collection  of Mr. Adel  Mandil and the collection of the Sharjah Museum of His Highness Sheikh Al Qasimi and the Collection of Mr. Ramzi Dalloul, which is the core of a museum in Lebanon.Today there is an Iraqi collection of an Iraqi friend of mine, who’s passion began in  the eighties, he has great dreams for the establishment of an institution that undertakes  the documentation of Iraqi art and supports young artists, we are with him helping  him in his dreams because they are  our dreams ,it is the  Ibrahimi Collection  of Iraq ,its owner is Dr. Hassanain Saeb Jaafar.

Nations boast of their creative abilities. We believe that the Iraqi Fine arts have always been our best ambassador, and  it reminds us that we are Relatives of those who  built the greatest civilizations on the face of the earth.
