April 20, 1929 Born in the capital, Baghdad, Iraq. His father was a tailor for men's abayas in the Kadhimiya market.
1943-1950 Studied primary school at Al-Kadhimiya Al-Amiriya School, middle school at Al-Kadhimiya School for Boys, and secondary school at Al-Adhamiya School for Boys.
1949/1950-1953 Studied sculpture in the evening department at the Institute of Fine Art in Baghdad. He participated in the meeting of the General Assembly of the Friends of Art Association, which was held at the home of Mrs. Nahida Al-Haidari.
1952 Participated in the Ibn Sina Festival in Baghdad and exhibited sculptural works made of gypsum, wood, and alabaster.
1953 Worked as a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, joined the Baghdad Group for Modern Art, and participated in its second exhibition, in which he exhibited six works of wood and gypsum.
1954 Participated in the third exhibition of the Baghdad Group for Modern Art, exhibiting ten works of gypsum, wood, and alabaster, and participated in the first conference of Arab writers in Damascus, Syria. He began working as a teacher in the secondary schools.
1955 Participated in the Iraqi Art Exhibition in India and exhibited four works of wood, and he traveled to Rome to start his studies there at the Zaka Institute for Medals. He rented a small studio for him to continue sculpting, and he was accepted into the Official Ceramics School in Rome and the Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture.
1956 Graduated from the Zaka Institute for Medals.
1958 Held a solo exhibition in Rome, where he exhibited thirty works of bronze and wood and won an award from the Mayor of Rome. He held another solo exhibition in Palermo, in which twenty-three colored ceramic works were exhibited.
1959 Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome from the Department of Sculpture and won an award from the World Exhibition in Rome. Then, he became an assistant to the artist Jewad Selim in the Freedom Monument project as he was pouring bronze pieces in the city of Pistoia in the province of Florence in Italy. He held two solo exhibitions at Mericia Hall in Rome, in which twenty woodworks were exhibited, and the Paris Hall in San Remo, in which twenty wood and bronze works were exhibited.
1960 Asked to work on purchasing a bronze casting factory in Italy by the Dean of the Institute of Fine Arts, the artist Khaled Al-Jadir.
1961 Completed his studies in bronze casting in Pistoia for the 14th of July monument with Jewad Selim in the Tuscany region in Italy. Then, he returned to Baghdad and lived in his father's house in Kadhimiya. He continued the completion of the Freedom Monument in Tahrir Square after the death of Jewad Selim.
1962 Worked as a teacher of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad until 1996. He held two solo exhibitions, one of them in Dr. Makiya’s house, in which he exhibited forty works of bronze and wood that he made in Rome, and the second in the ‘Orosdi Back’ hall in Baghdad, exhibited forty-five works of bronze, gypsum, and wood. He bought a plot of 200 square meters and built a workshop and smelter in the Al-Dawoodi neighborhood.
1964 Won the Gulbenkian Prize as the best Iraqi sculptor.
1965 Held a solo exhibition at Al-Wasiti Hall in Baghdad, in which forty-two works made of wood, bronze, and copper were exhibited.
1967 Appointed as a lecturer in the College of Engineering in the Architectural Department and worked there for five years. He traveled to Italy to choose a specific marble to make a mural in the Medical City in Baghdad.
1968 Held a solo exhibition in Gallery One in Beirut, in which he exhibited twenty-two works of wood, bronze, and copper. At the beginning of the year, he married Mrs. Ghaya Mahdi Al-Rahhal, sister of artist Kalid Al-Rahhal, and they gave birth to their eldest son "Yaser."
1970 Held a solo exhibition for only one work entitled "Baghdadi Caféالكهوة البغدادية" at a length of 6 meters in the Iraqi Fine Artists Association in Baghdad and became a member of the National Committee for Fine Arts and among the committee were Faik Hassan, Shakir Hassan Al-Said, Hafidh Al-Droubi, Nori Al-Rawi, Jamil Hamoudi and Salem Al-Alousi.
1971 Had a girl named "Hajer". He was assigned to organize a hall for the works of the artist Jewad Selim, to publish a book about him, and to make a statue of him.
1972 Participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Hall of the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1973 Participated in the second exhibition of the One Dimension Group in Baghdad, the fifteenth exhibition of the Iraqi Fine Artists Association at the Assembly Hall, and an exhibition of fourteen sculptors entitled "The Persons" in the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art - Gulbenkian Hall.
1974 Participated in the Cultural Festival of Al-Thawra newspaper in Baghdad and the First April Exhibition at the Academy of Arts Hall.
1975 Participated in the Second April Exhibition at the Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad.
1976 Held a solo exhibition at Al-Riwaq Hall in Baghdad, in which a hundred works of bronze were exhibited. He co-wrote educational books on paintings and sculptures with artists Saad Al-Tai and Amin Abbas, as requested by the Ministry of Education.
1977 Headed the sculpture department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad.
1980 Held a solo exhibition at Al-Riwaq Hall in Baghdad.
1981 Held a solo exhibition in the Hall of the Cultural Center in London, where he displayed eighty-five works of bronze, and participated in the Contemporary Iraqi Sculpture Exhibition at the Venice Palace Hall in Italy.
1983 Donated four relief carvings to the Museum of the Twentieth Revolution in Kufa.
1984 Held a solo exhibition at Al-Orfali Hall, in which a hundred bronze works were exhibited.
1987 Assigned to supervise the implementation of the "Victory Arc" by the Minister of Housing.
1991 Held a solo exhibition of sculpture at the Hall of the Cultural Center in Amman, exhibiting twenty-six works of wood and bronze.
1993 The Iraqi National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad allocated a permanent special wing for his works and displayed 150 statues of bronze, wood, stone, and gypsum. However, after the occupation of 2003, the museum’s holdings were stolen and destroyed.
1994 Awarded by the Minister of Culture in Lebanon.
2001 Moved his residence to Amman, Jordan, but kept visiting Baghdad frequently.
2002 Headed the National Arts Committee for UNESCO in Paris and won an honorary award from the Arab League in Egypt.
2010 Won an Honorary Award for Arab Creativity in Qatar for his achievements throughout his life.
He held and participated in many art exhibitions inside and outside Iraq.
September 12, 2011 Passed away in Amman at the age of eighty-two. His body was transported to Baghdad and buried in Al-Karkh cemetery.
2016 Google Arabia dedicated its home page to the late sculptor to celebrate his birthday.
2024 A retrospective exhibition was organized in collaboration with his children, Hajer and Yaser, at The Gallery in Baghdad.

- 20 ابريل 1929 وُلد الفنان محمد غني حكمت في العاصمة بغداد في العراق وكان والده طراز للعباءات الرجالية في سوق الكاظمية.

- 1943 – 1950 درس مرحلة الابتدائية في مدرسة الكاظمية الاميرية والمتوسطة في مدرسة الكاظمية للبنين والثانوية في مدرسة الاعظمية للبنين.

- 1949/1950- 1953 درس النحت في القسم المسائي في معهد الفنن الجميلة – بغداد. واشترك في اجتماع الهيئة العامة لجمعية أصدقاء الفن الذي اقيم في منزل السيدة ناهدة الحيدري.

- 1952 اشترك في مهرجان ابن سينا في بغداد وعرض فيه اعمال نحتية من الجبس والخشب والمرمر.

- 1953 عمل كمدرس في معهد الفنون الجميلة في بغداد وانضمّ الى جماعة بغداد للفن الحديث واشترك في معرضها الثاني وعرض فيه 6 اعمال من الخشب والجبس.

- 1954 اشترك في المعرض الثالث لجماعة بغداد للفن الحديث وعرض 10 اعمال من الجبس والخشب والمرمر واشترك في المؤتمر الأول للأدباء العرب في دمشق، سوريا. وبدأ يعمل كمدرس في الملاك الثانوي.

- 1955 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي في الهند وعرض 4 اعمال من الخشب وسافر الى روما ليبدأ بمسيرة دراسته هناك في معهد لاتزّكا للميداليات وأستأجر ستوديو صغير له ليستمر بالنحت وتم قبوله في مدرسة السيراميك الرسمية في روما واكاديمية الفنون الجميلة قسم النحت.

- 1956 تخرج من معهد لاتزّكا للميداليات.

- 1958 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة ماركوتسيما في روما وعرض فيه 30 عملاً من البرونز والخشب وحاز على جائزة من عمدة روما واقام معرض شخصي اخر في مدينة بالرمو عرض فيه 23 عملاً من السيراميك الملون.

- 1959 تخرج من أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في روما من قسم النحت، حاز على جائزة من المعرض العالمي في روم، وأصبح مساعد الفنان جواد سليم في مشروع نصب الحرية بعد ان كان يصبّ القطع البرونزية في مدينة بستويا في إقليم فلورنسا في إيطالي، واقام معرضين شخصية على قاعة ميريكيا في روما وعرض فيه 20 عملاً من الخشب وقاعة باريس في سان ريمو وعرض فيه 20 عملاً من الخشب والبرونز.

- 1960 تم ابلاغه بالعمل على شراء معمل لصب البرونز في ايطاليا من قبل عميد معهد الفنون الجميلة الفنان خالد الجادر.

- 1961 أكمل دراسة صب البرونز في مدينة بستويا (Pistoia) لنصب 14.تموز مع جواد سليم في أقليم توسكاني في ايطاليا وعاد الى بغداد وسكن في منزل والده في الكاظمية. وأستمر بإكمال نصب الحرية في ساحة التحرير بعد وفاة جواد سليم.

- 1962 عمل كمدرس فن النحت في أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في بغداد ولغاية عام 1996 واقام معرضين شخصية أحدهم في دار الدكتور مكية عرض فيه 40 عمل من البرونز والخشب التي نفذها في روما والثاني في اورزدي باك في بغداد وعرض فيه 45 عملاً من والبرونز والجبس والخشب وأشترى قطعة ارض بمساحة 200 متر مربع وبنا عليها مشغل ومصهر في حي الداودي.

- 1964 فاز بجائزة كولبنكيان كأفضل نحات عراقي.

- 1965 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الواسطي في بغداد وعرض فيه 42 عملاً من من الخشب والبرونز والنحاس.

- 1967 تم تعيينه كمحاضر في كلية الهندسة في القسم المعماري وعمل هناك لمدة خمس سنوات وسافر الى ايطاليا لأختيار مرمر معين لعمل جدارية في مدينة الطب في بغداد.

- 1968 اقام معرض شخصي في كاليري ون في بيروت وعرض فيه 22 عملاً من من الخشب والبرونز والنحاس وتزوج في بداية العام من السيدة غاية مهدي الرحال اخت الفنان خالد الرحال وانجبوا ابنهم الكبير "ياسر".

- 1970 اقام معرض شخصي لعمل واحد فقط بعنوان "الكهوة البغدادية" بطول 6 امتار في جمعية الفنانين في بغداد وأصبح عضو في اللجنة الوطنية للفنون التشكيلية ومن ضمن اللجنة كانوا كل من فائق حسن و وشاكر حسن آل سعيد وحافظ الدروبي ونوري الراوي وجميل حمودي وسالم الالوسي.

- 1971 رزق ببنت اسماها "هاجر" وتم تكليفه بتنظيم قاعة لأعمال الفنان جواد سليم واصدار كتاب عنه وعمل تمثال له.

- 1972 اشترك في معرض الفن العراقي المعاصر على قاعة المتحف الوطني للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1973 اشترك في المعرض الثاني لجماعة البعد الواحد في بغداد ومعرض جمعية الفنانين التشكيليين الخامس عشر على قاعة الجمعية ومعرض لـ14 نحات بعنوان "الشخوص" في متحف الوطني للفن الحديث – قاعة كولبنكيان.

- 1974 اشترك في المهرجان الثقافي لجريدة الثورة في بغداد ومعرض الحزب الاول على قاعة اكاديمية الفنون.

- 1975 اشترك في معرض الحزب الثاني في المتحف العراقي للفن الحديث في بغداد.

- 1976 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الرواق في بغداد وعرض فيه 100 عملاً من البرونز وألف كتاب تعليمي عن الرسم والنحت مع الفنانين سعد الطائي وأمين عباس حسب طلب وزارة التربية.

- 1977 ترأس قسم النحت في اكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في بغداد.

- 1980 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الرواق في بغداد.

- 1981 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة المركز الثقافي في لندن وعرض فيه 85 عملاً من البرونز واشترك في معرض النحت العراقي المعاصر على قاعة قصر فينيسيا في ايطاليا.

- 1983 أعطى متحف ثورة العشرين في مدينة الكوفة اربع لوحات من النحت البارز كهدية.

- 1984 اقام معرض شخصي على قاعة الأورفلي وعرض فيه 100 عملاً من البرونز.

- 1987 تم تكليفه بالإشراف على تنفيذ نصب "قوس النصر" من قبل وزير الإسكان.

- 1991 اقام معرض شخصي للنحت على قاعة المركز الثقافي في عمان وعرض 26 عملاً من الخشب والبرونز.

- 1993 خصص المتحف الوطني للفنون في بغداد جناح خاص دائم لأعماله وعرض فيه 150 تمثال من البرونز والخشب والحجر والجبس ولكن بعد احتلال عام 2003 تم سرقة وتحطيم مقتنيات المتحف.

- 1994 حاز على جائزة من قبل وزير الثقافة في لبنان .

- 2001 أنتقل للعيش في عمان- الأردن ويتردد على بغداد.

- 2002 ترأس اللجنة الوطنية للفنون الخاصة بيونيسكو في باريس وحاز على جائزة تكريمية من جامعة الدول العربية في مصر.

- 2010 حاز على جائزة تكريمية للإبداع العربي في قطر، عن انجازاته طول هذه السنين.

- اقام واشترك في العديد من المعارض الفنية داخل وخارج العراق.

- 12 سبتمبر 2011 تُوفي الفنان في عمان عن عمر يناهز الاثنان وثمانون عاماً في عمّان، وتم نقل جثمانه الى بغداد ودفن في مقبرة الكرخ.

- 2016 خصصت Google Arabia صفحتها الرئيسية للنحات الراحل احتفالاً بعيد ميلاده.

- 2024 أقيم معرض استعادي بالتعاون مع ابنيه هاجر وياسر على قاعة ذا غاليري في بغداد.
